Some Sisters serve as Chaplains in hospitals and in the local hospice.
Hospital and Hospice Chaplaincy is an important part of the multi-disciplinary team contributing to the holistic care of patients and their families. It is essentially a service offering a listening, supportive and prayerful space for all those admitted to a care facility.
Chaplains seek to support an individual and his/her family as they live with the many feelings, experiences and uncertainties that can arise following an admission – from the spectrum of waiting for a birth – its joys and possible sorrows – to the ‘relief’ of a diagnosis, treatment and wellness, the ‘trauma’ of an accident or the possible devastating news of a life-threatening diagnosis, longer treatment, the possible journey to terminal care and, for some, the journey to end of life care.
Chaplains simply are available to ‘journey with’ or ‘be with’ a person as he/she explores the unchartered waters of sickness, vulnerability, recovering and loss, and, for some, this will involve exploring with a faith or spiritual lens or perspective.
