Catherine McAuley, Foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1778. It was never her intention to establish a Religious Congregation. Her desire was to help women and children who were vulnerable, poor or ill.
When she realised that founding a Congregation was the only way at that she could ensure the continuation of her work she founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831 in Baggot Street in Dublin. She died in 1841.
