Commemorating Catherine McAuley

Catherine McAuley’s contribution to Irish life has been commemorated in the Irish currency and in Irish postage stamps.

In 1978 a 10p commemorative stamp was issued to celebrate the second centenary of her birth. The stamp was designed by Robert Ballagh.

In 1994 The Central Bank of Ireland issued a new series of notes also designed by Robert Ballagh the theme of which was centred on the 19th and 20th centuries, the era in which modern Ireland was formed. These notes commemorated some of the influences which had contributed to its formation. The front of the £5 features a portrait of Catherine McAuley. It is set against a view of the Mater Misericordia Hospital in Dublin.

A classroom with three children is featured on the back of the note. The first verse of ‘Mise Raifterí an File’ is featured on the blackboard. A map of Europe without national boundaries hangs on the wall of the room.
