Makadara is the first house of the Mercy Sisters in Kenya and the house was blessed in 1958 and recently has been completely refurbished. It is situated in the Eastlands area of Nairobi. After the first twenty five years and additional building was established and this became known as McAuley House. Both these houses have only just reopened after major renovations, some of which are not yet complete. The convent is home to five Sisters and increasing! Two Sisters are students in the city in business and accounts, one is a social and community development worker in Mukuru Promotion Centre and one a teacher in Donholm primary school. Another Sister is currently in Ireland doing some formation training. There is a busy and thriving mercy Sisters’ dispensary on the compound and Huruma [meaning mercy] secondary school is also part of the complex. McAuley House has been used for seminars and meetings for various groups, especially the Sisters in temporary profession.
