In the ongoing global challenge against human trafficking, front-line industries often serve as the crucial first line of defense. At the forefront of this effort in Ireland MECPATHS on behalf of The Congregation continues to lead the charge under the leadership of JP O’ Sullivan.
Founded on the principle of “Know It, See It, Say It,” MECPATHS addresses a grave issue that frequently goes unnoticed: child trafficking hidden in plain sight. By collaborating directly with sectors such as social work, healthcare, security, and especially the hospitality industry, MECPATHS equips personnel with bespoke training to spot the subtle indicators of child exploitation and take action safely. Because hotels and transport hubs can unknowingly become environments where trafficking occurs, training hospitality staff to identify red flags makes a life-saving difference.
In recognition of their transformative advocacy and training programs, MECPATHS has been honoured with the Lux Life Global Hospitality Human Rights Champion of the Year Award 2026.
This prestigious award from LUXlife Magazine celebrates organizations that demonstrate extraordinary commitment to human rights, safety, and social responsibility within the global hospitality sector. By bridging the gap between child protection advocacy and industry practice, MECPATHS has trained tens of thousands of staff and front-line workers, empowering them to become active guardians within their workplaces.
Decades of Industry Collaboration
Central to MECPATHS success has been its strong, enduring relationships with key hospitality leaders across Ireland. Major hotel groups including PREM Group, Dalata Hotel Group and Trigon Hotel Group along with The Irish Hotels Federation, who have embraced MECPATHS mission by integrating anti-trafficking modules into their standard employee onboarding and development curricula.
PREM Group, for example, pioneered this approach back in 2017 by becoming the first hotel group in Ireland to incorporate MECPATHS training into its internal Learning Management System. Beyond hotel operators, MECPATHS has actively partnered with the Irish Hotels Federation and leading academic institutions, such as the Shannon College of Hotel Management, Technological University Dublin, Munster Technological University, and Griffith College Dublin. By educating future hospitality leaders before they even step into management roles, MECPATHS ensures that child safeguarding becomes an innate standard of Irish tourism and hospitality culture.
Receiving the Human Rights Champion of the Year Award highlights the essential truth of MECPATHS mission: child protection is a shared responsibility. Through their continued partnership with the hospitality sector, MECPATHS ensures that doors remain open to guests, but firmly closed to exploitation. This accolade serves as both a celebration of their impactful work and a reminder of the vigilance required to protect children across Ireland and beyond.
