Women and Girls’ Empowerment in the Advocacy Ministry in South Sudan (Mercy Beyond Borders-MBB)

South Sudan continues to face complex challenges arising from prolonged conflict, poverty, displacement, and environmental degradation. In these fragile contexts, women and girls bear a disproportionate burden, experiencing limited access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and protection from violence. Advocacy ministry for women and girls’ empowerment is therefore not optional; it is a moral, social, and faith-driven imperative.

At the heart of this advocacy ministry is the charism of mercy, which impels us to stand with those who are poor, and to work for social and ecological justice (Constitution, # 34.1). Mercy is not merely compassion felt at a distance; it is love in action. It moves us to listen to the cries of the women and girls whose dignity has been violated, whose voices have been silenced, and whose futures are threatened by systemic injustice.

It is important to note that the Mercy Beyond Borders’ (MBB’s) empowerment advocacy for East Africa seeks to transform structures that perpetuate inequality. Guided by the charism of mercy, MBB’s advocacy efforts focus on:

  • Promoting girls access to quality education as a pathway to freedom, leadership, and sustainable peace
  • Defending women’s rights to safety, participation, and decision-making at family, community, and national levels
  • Addressing harmful cultural practices through dialogue, awareness, and community engagement
  • Supporting women’s economic empowerment to reduce dependency and vulnerability.

Indeed, mercy calls us to go beyond relief and charity toward justice that ‘restores dignity.’ Advocacy becomes an expression of solidarity, walking alongside women and girls as they claim their God-given worth and agency.

In South Sudan, poverty and ecological degradation are deeply intertwined. Climate shocks, floods, and land degradation disproportionately affect women, who are primary caregivers and food providers. The charism of mercy impels us to stand with those who are poor, and to work for social and ecological justice by integrating environmental concerns into women’s empowerment initiatives. To this end, advocacy ministry includes:

  • Supporting women’s leadership in climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods
  • Promoting care for creation as integral to human dignity
  • Encouraging community practices that protect land, water, and future generations.

No doubt this holistic approach echoes the Catholic Social Teaching principle that care for the poor and care for the earth cannot be separated.

This reflection would be amiss were it not to view women and girls’ empowerment in East Africa as a ministry of hope! Through advocacy grounded in in mercy, faith communities, civil society, and women leaders become agents of transformation. When women are empowered, families are strengthened, communities are healed, and peace become possible.

Inspired by the charism of mercy, MBB’s advocacy ministry in East Africa, Malawi and Haiti, continues to affirm that every woman and girl is seen, valued, and called to fullness of life. Standing with them is not only an act of justice, it is a faithful response to God’s call to love, serve, and transform the world.
