Sisters Of Mercy Never Retire!

Sisters of Mercy never retire was certainly the truth for three dedicated Mercy women in Tuam, when they moved from a busy school workload into another one, helping the cause of children with Special Needs in the local area.

Sisters Philip Divilly (RIP), Finian Fallon (RIP) and Sebastian Dolly (alive and well at the wonderful age of 97) became advocates for children who were intellectually disabled, showing this practically through their dedicated commitment. This entailed annual appeals, knocking at doors in the housing estates around the Tuam environs asking for funding, in order to address basic needs for what was then entitled the Mentally Handicapped Association.

Saint Oliver’s Special School

The needs of children who are intellectually disabled had been addressed in a school in the town, but it was in a confined area, with no room for expansion. It was decided in the Western Province that one way to mark the New Millennium was to donate land for social housing. Philip and Sebastian were quick to see an opportunity and requested that some of the land would be given as sites for the needs of the intellectually disabled. “Ask and you shall receive” came to pass and a site was allocated to this special school. COVID-19 delayed an official opening of the new state of the art school until Wednesday, September 10th, 2025.
