World Habitat Day – October 7th

What is World Habitat Day?

World Habitat Day is recognised by the United Nations to reflect on the state of towns and cities. It also focuses on the basic human right to adequate shelter and reminds the world of its shared responsibility to protect the future of the human habitat.  (twinkl.ie)

The United Nations designated the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of our habitats, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter.

The Day is also intended to remind the world that we all have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns.  (un.org)

More than 1.8 billion people worldwide lack adequate housing. Every year 2 million people are forcible evicted, many more are threatened with evictions and some 150 million people worldwide are homeless.

Adequate housing is a human right enshrined in international human rights law. Failing to recognise, protect, and fulfil the Right to Adequate Housing results in the violation of a plethora of fundamental rights including the Right to Work, Education, Health and Security.   (unhabitat.org)

Whatsoever You Do

Whatsoever you do to the least of my people
That you do unto me.

When I was homeless, you opened your door;
When I was naked, you gave me your coat.
Now enter into the home of my Father.
Whatsoever you do to the least of my people
That you do unto me.

When I was weary, you helped me find rest;
When I was anxious, you calmed all my fears.
Now enter into the home of my Father.
Whatsoever you do to the least of my people
That you do unto me.
