International Moon Day – July 20th

Just as we chose to go to the moon, we know it’s never too soon to choose hope.  (Amanda Gorman)

Among the planets that illumine our skies and our souls, the Moon fills us with wonder and hope. The Moon, in all her seasons, draws us to mystery.

The Moon is important for all life on Earth and with its gravitational pull, we get regular tides, a stable climate and consistent 24-hour days. This rhythm in the movement of time has guided humans for thousands of years.

Earth’s Moon is the brightest and largest object in our night sky.

The Moon was likely formed after a Mars-sized body collided with Earth several billion years ago.

Earth’s only natural satellite is simply called “the Moon” because people didn’t know other moons existed until Galileo Galilei discovered four moons orbiting Jupiter in 1610 (science.nasa.gov/moon)

The moon, like a flower in heaven’s high bower
With silent delight sits and smiles on the night
(William Blake)

Moon river, wider than a mile
I’m crossing you in style some day
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you’re going, I’m going your way

Two drifters, off to see the world
There’s such a lot of world to see
We’re after the same rainbow’s end
Waiting round the bend
My huckleberry friend
Moon river and me

Songwriters: Johnny Mercer/Henry Mancini
