Welcome English Language Centre

On Monday April 15th, 2024 Welcome English held its Life Long Learning event as part of the Life Long Learning Festival, Cork City which took place in the city from April 10th – 17th. The event was called Learn about Other Cultures. It was from 12.00 pm to 1.30 pm. Students from Brazil, Ukraine, Egypt, Russia, Afghanistan and China took part on the day.

Brigadeiros

Each group displayed items from their countries as well as providing national dishes. From Ukraine we had Bortsch and Pierogi as well as Varenyky. Brazil, we had cheese bread and fabulous chocolate desserts called Brigadeiros (Chocolate Balls) From Russia we had a delicious Medovik (Honey Cake) and from Afghanistan we had Kabuli Pulao (Rice and Vegatable dish) and dessert from Egypt was a selection of Basbousa (Semolina Cake) and biscuits and from China we had a classroom demonstration of how to make Chinese Dumplings. We also had a Ukrainian tea tasting ceremony courtesy of Olexsander one of our students.

Kabuli Pulao

Apart from our tutors and students visiting the event, we also had 40 visitors come to us. This was a great response as we usually only have 15 to 20 visitors. Visitors met with our students, sampled the food and took part in the tea ceremony as well as the dumpling demonstration. During the week tutors and students were encouraged to visit events in other parts of the city. Events attended were woodwork demo in St. Johns College where each student made their own breadboard. Students participated in designing a mural for display in Cork College of Commerce. Other activities students participated in included Visits to Nano Nagle Centre, St. Finbarr’s Cathedral as well as a walking tour of the city. It was a very enjoyable week.
