Mercy Sister to receive Global Medal at Saint John’s University

Sister Deirdre Mullan, RSM will receive the Vincentian Global Medal at a ceremony to be held at St. John’s University on September 26th, 2023.

Sister Deirdre, a member of the Northern Province of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy, Ireland. Deirdre was contacted by Fr. Patrick Griffin, CM, Director of the Vincentian Center for Church and Society at St. John’s, to ask if she would be willing to accept the International Medal in recognition of her work in education and advocacy through her work in Mercy Schools, highlighting the Arise Foundation, London and New York.

St. John’s is a Vincentian University, inspired by St. Vincent de Paul’s compassion and zeal for service. Through the International Medal, St. John’s recognizes and supports the commitment of ARISE to funding and training frontline groups, mainly Sisters, to building anti-slavery networks, to commissioning relevant research, and to advocate for change.

St. John’s is a metropolitan and global university. As a global university, St. John’s is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in the United States, enriched by a mixture of cultures, complementing an internationalized curriculum.

The University wishes to honour Sister Deirdre’s work and commitment to social justice, and especially her advocacy which encourages students to act on Pope Francis’ reminder that there is “No mercy without concreteness”.

Each year, the International Medal is given to an organization and individual for distinguished contributions to international goodwill.

Sister Deirdre said that while she is humbled to be recognized in this way, she will accept the award on behalf of the many frontline workers, especially Sisters, with whom she works.

On this special occasion we send warm Congratulations to Deirdre for this very significant recognition of her great and unfailing commitment to the relief of poverty in its many expressions.

Thank you Deirdre
