New building opened at the Mater Hospital, Dublin

The Sisters of Mercy founded the Mater Hospital in 1861. A new building at the hospital – The Rock Wing – was opened on 20th April, 2023. It is named after Sister Margherita Rock rsm. This new unit will cater for an additional 5,000 patients annually.

The building has been designed, built and delivered on budget in two years under emergency legislation enacted during the first part of the COVID pandemic.

Mater Hospital

Sr. Margherita Rock died in July 2019. At the opening ceremony her colleagues remembered her as an anchor of the hospital due to her work in expanding its services.

She also served as executive chairperson of the Mater Hospital’s Board of Management.

Margherita was remembered at the opening ceremony with gratitude, appreciation, admiration and a prayer. May patients and staff of the Rock Building be blessed abundantly.
