On April 19th at the Câmara dos Vereadores, Sr. Celine Conway was awarded the honour of ‘Citizen of the City of Campina Grande’ in recognition of her 23 years of dedication to the needy on the periphery of the City:
- through a Literacy Project, Projeto Esperança
- through her work with ‘catadores’ (those who gathered recyclable materials (and food) from the City dump but who now work together as a cooperative called Cotremare, where they have better conditions
- through the ‘Toque de Esperança’, a project in the most abandoned area on the periphery of Campina Grande
Celine’s Award
Here women meet together, join in activities and work at soap making, packaging, sales etc. from which they earn a little to help them in their daily life.
We are very proud of Celine and her faithful perseverance in carrying forward the mission of Mercy in Campina Grande. Catherine McAuley could not have imagined that the flame she started in 1827 in Dublin, Ireland would continue to blaze in Campina Grande today and yet, through Celine’s steadfast service, that is what is happening and what was honoured on April 19th.
Ad multos annos.
