Extending Mercy

As the number of our Sisters in the US Region continues to diminish, the Sisters took the courageous and faith-filled decision to allocate some of their resources to be used to further the work of Mercy even when they are gone.  A large donation of money was completed in December 2022 and gifted to Mercy Housing.  This group was originally sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas with support from other Congregations in the Midwest area of the United States.  This year it celebrated 40 years of providing support in the form of housing, health care, education, childcare and job training for houseless people all over the US.

We Sisters of the US Region are so grateful that we were able to find the perfect home for this donation as it has become the seed money for an endowment fund for the organization.  In September 2022, Sisters Alyce Waters and Susan De Guide accepted the invitation and recognition to be given at the 40th Gala.  Here follows a personal account of what it was like.

Denver, September 2022
Quite often I have come away from a lovely, fancy, event and am glad that it is over!  It’s nothing against the people but rather stemming from my own basic shyness.  However, what a surprise Alyce and I experienced at this event.  It was for me a small peek into the beatific vision.  Persons were there glowing with joy, enthusiasm and passion for the work of Mercy.  Every racial group was represented and the borders of different faiths were stretched.  Everyone was so kind and friendly and all were involved in the Mercy Housing project in some way. We met Ismael Guerrero, who spoke at our Region Assembly in April, and Jane Graf.  Many of the administrators and co-ordinators of the villages were there, along with those receiving special recognition.

On another note, we were truly delighted with the talents and resources found in these merciful people — all younger adults.   One Hispanic woman from Los Angeles shared with us that she will be serving on the MIA board in the capacity of Finance Manager.  The wonderful Curtis Family, residents of Mercy Housing, who have been been finalists on America’s Got Talent, performed many uplifting songs.

Alyce and I were touched so deeply as we listened to the heartwarming and powerful stories of transformation. After a presentation by Sr. Patricia McDermott (Institute President), Alyce and I were introduced, both saying a few words.  We felt so humbled and proud of what our little Region has done for Mercy Housing.  Our careful stewardship has been blessed, many describing the endowment as the seeds for a bright future.

Let us celebrate and give thanks to God and to Catherine for paving the way.
