A Sower Went Out To Sow

The Parable of the Sower was a topic of conversation on Sunday July 12th.  Sowing seeds was in the mind of Jesus from his first public introduction in Capernaum when he told us that he was sent by God to “bring Good News to the poor…” (Luke 4). For three years we saw the unfolding of this mission and Jesus left us with the hope that we in our turn would “go out to all the world and tell the Good News.”

The Parable of the Sower is another focus moment for us and it continues to evoke insight and commentary in 2020.  Some viewpoints include:

  • We sow and God gives the growth. This reflects a deep relationship of mutual trust.
  • We see in the ecosystem that there are rocks and thorns and arid places together with fertile soil. In a complex way it is the experience of testing times in our lives that nurture the fertile space.
  • Within ourselves we find the obstacles and within ourselves we find the good soil and in the journey of hope and mercy we bring forth the harvest.
  • The Parable of the Sower situates the sower within the ecosystem of life where mutual respect and understanding of diversity is essential for sustainable growth.
  • The Sowing in this parable is available to everyone. The Sower is not selective. There is a message of the open door in the mission.
  • The Parable of the Sower holds the connection for an integral ecology as sun and rain, seeds and soil, birds and rocks, thorns and drought offer us a profound lesson in letting go to the natural rhythm.

Despite the rocks and thorns we put planting first.  Listen!              Matthew 13: 1-9
