On Saturday 22nd September, 2012 we had a truly marvellous celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the foundation of The Mater Hospital, Nairobi. It was held in the open air in the hospital grounds. We had Mass celebrated by Bishop Kimengich from Turkana, and a big congregation comprising of doctors, nursing staff and other staff as well as a myriad of friends and well wishers.
Among the many visitors we had three Sisters of Mercy who came from Ireland especially for the occasion and who in the past were all associated with the growth of the hospital – Srs. Magdalene Rafferty, Andrea de Souza and Cora Ferriter. The Sisters brought the good wishes of the Congregation in Ireland as well gifts.
Church and State dignitaries rejoiced with us and many spoke glowingly of the great contribution of the hospital has made towards the health of the citizens of Nairobi and beyond.

After the Mass the blessing and official opening of a new ward, called ‘The McAuley Ward, followed. This boosts the bed capacity to 174. We celebrated the growth of the many years since the humble beginnings in 1962 and shared our aspirations for the next decade.
The Sisters feel particularly blessed in the dedicated staff and consultants who work with us and who came out in force to share in the joy.
