Praying For The Canonisation Of Catherine McAuley

On Sunday October 17th the world celebrated with the Sisters of St. Joseph on the canonisation, in Rome, of their Foundress Blessed Mary MacKillop. It is wonderful that all peoples are getting to know and learn about Mary MacKillop and to appreciate the gift that she is to the church. Mary MacKillop had connections with Ireland and spent three and a half months in the country.  Some Irish girls returned to Australia with her and joined her Congregation.

It is a good time to remember that Sisters of Mercy, Associates and colleagues around the world are praying for the canonisation of Catherine McAuley, the Foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. Catherine was a woman of great holiness who dedicated her life to the ‘care of the poor, sick and uneducated’. To read the full story of Catherine McAuley’s life, click here.

Four Sisters from Ireland, the US and Australia –  Srs. Brenda Dolphin, Sheila Carney, Anne Hannon and Mary Duffy – work continually towards making Catherine McAuley more widely known and loved and the hope is that some day, she might be considered a saint of the church.

Sr. Brenda Dolphin, Postulator for the Cause of Catherine McAuley says “When the church declares that a person is a saint, the church is saying in effect that this person is with God, that his or her life is worth imitating and that she or he has the power to intercede with God on our behalf. Catherine McAuley is well on the road to being recognised as one such person by the church.

So that the whole church may acknowledge this, we pray constantly that Catherine will be beatified and canonised and for that we need a miracle that will be accepted by the criteria laid down by the church. Please continue to pray through Catherine’s intercession for all you need. In God’s good time a miracle will come.”

The Committee met in Mercy International Centre, Baggot Street on October 11th to discuss how to move forward.
