The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Music

The North Cork heat of the over 60’s competition was held at Mallow Mercy Centre. Sr. Gabriel Thornton of Charleville, originally from Kanturk, delighted audiences and judges alike with her performance of “She Moved Through the Fair”. Her recital ensured her a place in the county semi final of the competition at Cork City Hall on 18th April.

This year marks the 34th Anniversary of the Over 60’s Competition, the popularity of which continues to grow since it began in 1977.

Sr. Gabriel entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of Mercy in Cobh in 1953. In 1955 she moved to Charleville. She ministered in Charleville, Fermoy and Buttevant.

Fate or divine intervention led to Sr. Gabriel’s participation in the contest. Her companion, Sr. Perpetua Lynch, runner up in last year’s contest, was unable to take part in the competition this year and Sr. Gabriel went in her place. Though she hadn’t been involved in a talent contest previously, Sr. Gabriel said that she had always been interested in singing.

“I was a member of Duhallow Choir for six years and while I was in Buttevant was a member of the convent choir under Sr. Oliver. I do not consider myself to be a very good singer but I never refuse to sing when asked at anything. I will do my very best in the semi-final,” she said.

Unfortunately, Sr. Gabriel didn’t make it through the semi final but was highly commended. She greatly enjoyed the practice twice weekly and brought great life and energy to the competition.
