Mmakau

Mmakau is a rural village in the North West Province of South Africa. In the area of education, the Sisters run a kindergarten, primary and secondary school.  Adult Basic Education (ABET) is provided for learners who have either dropped out of school or who never got a chance of being educated.

Skills development education for unemployed people helps the locals to become employable. Once a person comes to the Convent needing food or any other assistance, they are encouraged to pursue the skills development courses on offer in order to break the cycle of poverty. This often results in the graduates setting up their own small businesses so that they become self sufficient.

Bertoni Mercy Clinic is an NGO Clinic administered by the Sisters of Mercy. It is in operation since 1961, offering Primary Health Care to the Community of Mmakau. The Clinic is recognized by the Ministry of Health in the North West Province. An anti-retroviral programme is provided for local people affected with HIV/AIDS.

A nutrition programme is an integral part of all the projects in Mmakau.
