Our Story

Perhaps our World of today could be divided into two groupings, two distinct ways of viewing the world. On the one hand we have war, division, hatred, non acceptance of difference –too much war, too much division. But on the other hand we have groups of people who believe in peace and unity, young people willing to take a chance on getting married, having children, believing in the future. Anti-war groups conscientising us to the fact that there is another way. All sorts of movements which say, “yes, we believe, we hope, we long for a future full of hope, peace and unity”.

In the light of this yearning for unity and peace in diversity, we, the Sisters of Mercy of Peru who belong to the Irish Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy, have been making our own journey over the last few years. We dare to witness to the fact that different cultures can live together in peace and not only that but they can enrich and nourish each other and lead us to a deeper understanding as to what being fully human and fully alive can mean in our broken world of today. We still have a long way to go on the journey but we have made a good start.

This new beginning was marked by the official joining together of the two groups linked with the Irish Congregation (See History) into one new Regional Group.

In Chaclacayo, Lima from the 13th to the 19th of February, 2007 the group held its first assembly as the “New Peru Region”, thereby confirming their desire to live as one united group working with and for the most poor and marginalized people of Peru.

History

Our history lies in many different strands, many ears and hearts listening to the call of God – and our present lies in continuing this listening together.

Four distinct roots which can be readily identified have brought us to this moment in history. In 1966 some Sisters from the Cork & Ross Diocese heard a call to travel and work in Peru and were joined by some Sisters from the Kerry Diocese in the following years. In 1974 some Peruvian Sisters also answered this call to be Sisters of Mercy, working and living with their own people. In 1984 Sisters from Achonry made the journey to Lima and the Sisters of Tuam came shortly after them in 1986. Each group made a separate and different rich journey and impacted and was impacted by their interaction with the wonderful people and culture of Peru. In 1994 with the unification of the Diocesan units in Ireland into 4 Provinces, the Achonry and Tuam Sisters became a Mission Area attached to the Western Province and the Cork, Kerry and Peruvian Sisters became a Region attached to the Southern Province. It is these two groups which have now joined to make one new Peru Region.

Historia
